About Typing Speed Test
Measures typing speed in words per minute (WPM) with real-time accuracy tracking across multiple text passages. Developer-oriented passages include programming quotes, variable naming examples, and code-adjacent text with parentheses, underscores, and numbers — characters that appear in code but are absent from standard typing tests designed around prose. The test tracks your position with a cursor highlight and marks errors in red as you type. It does not let you proceed past errors without correcting them (to prevent gaming the score), and the timer starts on first keystroke rather than on page load. Results show WPM, accuracy percentage, and raw time elapsed. WPM is calculated using the standard formula: (characters typed / 5) / minutes, where dividing by 5 normalizes for word length. Average developer typing speed is around 60-80 WPM. Touch-typists who do not look at the keyboard consistently score 90+ WPM with high accuracy. The bottleneck for most developers is not typing speed but thinking speed — however, being able to type without looking at the keyboard significantly reduces cognitive load when coding.
